Training for Transport

A multidisciplinary study day promoting the safe transfer of ventilated patients.

This course will be of interest to anaesthetic staff, nursing staff, operating department practitioners (ODPs) and ambulance personnel.

Background

Background

Every year there are over 11,000 inter-hospital transfers in the UK and this is often when critical incidents occur.

A very well planned course the multi-disciplinary team approach was very useful

John, senior ODP

Training for Transport is a nationally recognised course providing health care professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake the safe transport of all critically ill patients.

This day is taught by senior clinical and academic staff, from a variety of specialities within critical care, including consultant medical staff and specialist nurses.

We use a series of short lectures, skills stations and clinical scenarios to support and facilitate learning. Candidates work in small inter-professional groups to simulate team working in clinical practice.

Course content

Course content

The course encompasses all aspects of planning, organising and completing a safe transfer of a ventilated patient. It uses a variety of short lectures followed by skills stations and clinical scenarios to reinforce knowledge and develop practical skillls.

The lectures added to my knowledge of transporting critically ill patients, which up to now has been lacking, a very enjoyable and informative day.

Paul, senior ODA

Candidates work in small multi-professional teams incorporating anaesthetists, nurses, ambulance personnel and operating department practitioners, with a maximum of sixteen candidates per course.

The course emphasises:
  • safety
  • communication
  • patient monitoring
  • drug delivery
  • physiology
  • teamwork
  • safe patient transfer

Course structure

Short lectures

These sessions include short introductions to the safety aspects of transfer, communication and the physiological consequences of transfer.

The scenarios were of real value – it is good to work with a team.

Sam, SHO in anaesthetics

Skills stations

Each group of candidates rotates through a series of skills stations including drug delivery during transfer, ventilation and patient monitoring.

Scenarios

The scenarios demonstrate all aspects of safe transfer discussed in the lectures and skills stations. They involve the ‘real transfer’ of patient simulators to a waiting ambulance and other clinical environments.

Course Dates

This study day will run on Thursday 6th September 2012.  For more information contact Carie Taylor carie.taylor@york.ac.uk or (01904) 321310 or download a copy of the flyer (PDF , 156kb)
