Background

NICE guidance on recognising acutely ill patients, states that all qualified staff working in secondary care need to be able to recognise impending critical illness and understand how to manage patients in an appropriate and timely way (NICE 2007). The Department of Health Sciences offers a number of skills based acute and critical care study days and specialist courses ranging from First Aid at Work through to recognising the sick adult and the transfer of acute and critically ill patients. We are currently developing a new innovative course focusing on the development of skills in the management of major trauma.

These courses are aimed at staff working in secondary care, including nurses, paramedics and ODPs.
