Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in the UK (BHF 2003) and the prevalence of heart failure is increasing as the population ages. Cost-effective management of patients with cardiac problems in community and hospital settings requires a range of technical and therapeutic skills.
This online module offers practitioners the opportunity to develop skills in coronary heart disease prevention, while working in the virtual learning environment with simulated patients. The module follows four patient cases and covers both primary and secondary prevention of CHD. Practitioners work together, with expert tutors, to solve patient problems and develop patient prevention plans; sharing ideas through online discussion boards.
The course content is organise into weekly activities so practitioners can plan their study to suit their busy home and work routines. All discussion boards are asynchronous, so there's no fixed time for accessing the course; it's available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via the internet so practitioners can study anywhere they can get internet access. The course is assessed by three short pieces of reflective writing which are submitted electronically in the form of a portfolio. An introduction is given to help practitioners learn to use the course technology. Familiarity with using email and browsing websites is assumed.
The course is taught completely online, with no attendance at study days. Access to all the evidence and clinical guidelines is provided by the course on the internet.
The course is run twice a year in January and October - for 2012, this starts on 10 October. Please contact us on 01904 321321 for more details.
