The Mentor Preparation Programme (MPP) aims to equip practitioners with an appropriate level of knowledge and understanding in order to fulfil the role of a registered mentor. Mentors are in a key position to influence the learning experience of students that they encounter.

You will:

  • learn how to facilitate an effective learning process across a range of care settings
  • have a key role in the management, development and appraisal of the learning environment
This programme meets the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice (2008) and consists of the following practical aspects:
  • pre-course briefing (half day) for both MPP students and supervising mentors on Trust sites
  • five full day workshops (PDF , 78kb) over the 12 week period delivered on Locality NHS sites
  • student handbook including pre workshop material
  • Mentor Preparation Programme portfolio (to be completed in the student’s practice setting)
  • tutorial support

This course has been commissioned by the Yorkshire and the Humber Strategic Health Authority to train mentors in areas that will take University of York pre-registration nursing and midwifery students on placement. We accept applications from both NHS and independent sectors.

Due to the high demand for places it is unlikely that places will be available for self-funding students or applicants in areas which do not take University of York pre-registration nursing and midwifery students.

Our course management team allocates places in conjunction with Practice Learning Facilitators and our Allocations and Placement Manager, to ensure that placement areas have adequate numbers of mentors to support students and to expand the placement circuit wherever possible.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be registered nurses with 1 year full time equivalent post registration experience before commencing on the programme. The applicants manager must support this development. A Supervising Registered Mentor in practice is required to assess the MPP student’s practice outcomes.
