Departmental roles
Kathryn is the Departmental Administrator with primary responsibility for the management and co-ordination of a wide range of administrative services and functions across the department, and to manage a team of administrative and secretarial staff in order to ensure that teaching and research activities are supported efficiently and effectively. She provides on-going continuity in the event of a change of head of department, chair of board of studies, chair of board of examiners, admissions tutors, etc.
Kathryn joined the Department of Environment and Geography in 2004 with a career background in the financial sector before moving into higher education.
Key duties
Office management
- Development, implementation and management of all departmental office systems and procedures, and ensuring accuracy of all data and record keeping (e.g. examinations and assessment results, module choices etc)
- Routine facilities management
Staff supervision
- Recruitment, induction, supervision, performance management and training of a team of administrative/secretarial staff
Financial administration and budgets
- Manage and monitor departmental budget and all associated financial administration and reporting
- Day-to-day purchasing and authorisation of expenditure
- Ensure accurate salary payments for associated and contract staff in the department
- Cash handling
- Support for research grant applications
Student support/Academic support
- Management and administration of departmental undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, examinations and admissions procedures
- Management and administration of departmental teaching programme/teaching timetable/examinations timetable
- Management and administration of allocation students to modules; students to supervisors; collation of assignments, marking and distribution of results
- Assist in the publication of departmental handbooks, prospectuses and other publications
- Organisation and servicing of academic committees and examination boards
- Provide advice to staff and students on a range of University policies, procedures, departmental regulations, personal or welfare issues
