Thinking in Film...about Paris 3

Tuesday 3 February 2015, 6.15PM

The Battle of Algiers (Pontecorvo 1966)

A reconstruction of events in the Algerian War of Independence: confrontation between Muslim and French leads to the mobilisation of revolutionary cells in the Casbah, the retaliation of the French army, and an uncompromising spiral of torture, terrorism and assassination.

Thinking in Film teams up with the Year 2 Lang/Lit module Post-War Culture, and the Film/Lit MA module Cold War Culture: Literature, Film, Theory in the Dept. of English and Related Literature.   We present a series of films and an open discussion that will provide an opportunity to think about French politics in the 50s and 60s, and about the connections they might encourage us to make between events then and now.
