CLEAPSS

CLEAPSS is an advisory service providing support in science and technology for a consortium of local authorities and their schools including establishments for pupils with special needs. Their services cover health & safety, risk assessment, sources and use of chemicals, living organisms and equipment. CLEAPSS also provides advice on technicians and their jobs, as well as the design of laboratories and facilities and fittings for science rooms. Their services are available to the staff (including technicians) of member institutions.

CLEAPPS run a helpline, you can submit a query directly by completing an online form on the home page of their website

CLEAPSS produce a wide arrange of publications including

  • The laboratory handbook Intended to cover a whole range of topics needed by a science teacher or technician.
  • Hazcards Basic data and model risk assessment information for individual or small groups of chemicals used in school science
  • Recipe cards For some standard and some not-so-standard mixtures and solutions. 
  • Student Safety Sheets Risk assessment information for individual substances for use by science students at KS4 and above.
  • SRAs (Supplementary Risk Assessments) Detailed risk assessments for some science activities which pose particular risks.
  • Electronic documents A variety of resources which don’t work well on paper eg chemical stocklist
  • Customisable documents Word versions of some documents which schools can easily tailor to their own needs eg model H&S policy.

As a result of joint work with the former DfES and the ASE, three guides are available to non-members to download free of charge. These are:

  • L93, Managing Ionising Radiations and Radioactive Substances.
