Pre-application Queries
How long is the programme duration?
Most students complete the programme in 2 years. We appreciate that there may be exceptional circumstances which cause a student to want to take longer than this, and we would try to accomodate this where possible.
Will I be interacting with and getting to know other professionals involved in TEYL?
Yes, we encourage a great deal of interaction between those on the programme. Usually, students in each cohort are involved in TEYL in many countries.
Is there a requirement for me to travel during the MA TEYL programme?
Students can choose to start the programme with either an online Introductory Module or a face-to-face one. If you choose the face-to-face option you would need to travel either to Norway, Singapore or Switzerland for the introductory module at the start of year one and again at the start of year 2. There is no requirement to travel for the online version of the introductory modules.
If my circumstances change during the programme, is it possible to change from face-to-face to online, or vice versa?
Students usually take both introductory modules by the same delivery method.
What qualification will I receive at the end of the programme?
On successful completion of the 2 year programme, students are awarded the MA in Teaching English to Young Learners. Students starting after October 2011 may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma or a Postgraduate Certificate if they successfully complete part of the programme. Further details are available from the MA TEYL programme administrator.

I completed my degree a long time ago. Who should I ask for a reference?
We usually ask that applicants to the MA in Teaching English to Young Learners supply a reference from an employer and a reference from someone who can comment on the applicant's academic ability. Universities keep a record of their students for many years and we ask that applicants try to get a reference from the previous university before they try other options. If you are having difficulty, please contact the MA TEYL programme administrator.
I am not currently teaching young learners, or I do not have 3 years teaching experience. Would my application for the MA in TEYL still be considered?
Yes, the course is not restricted to teachers. It is suitable for a range of TEYL professionals including teachers, teacher trainers, materials writers, ministry officials, advisors and publishers, as long as applicants have the correct entry qualifications. Applicants will need access to a classroom for their second year action research project but this research could be carried out as an observer in another teacher's classroom.
I do not have a current IELTS test certificate. Will I need to take the test again?
IELTS certificates must have been issued within 2 years of your application to the MA in Teaching English to Young Learners for them to be accepted. If your certificate is older than this, please arrange to take the test again. If there is difficulty in doing this, please contact the MA TEYL programme administrator for advice. Please note that we also accept TOEFL and Cambridge Proficiency qualifications. See the
