Educational Research Group

The Department runs an Educational Research Group (ERG). The aim of the ERG is to improve research competence, in line with the University's Code of Practice regarding research students. Comprehensive training in research skills and techniques is key to the professional development and education of doctoral students, and the ERG is intended as a forum in which transferable research skills will be taught and developed. As research, particularly in the context of higher-degree work, is often a rather lonely and isolated activity we also hope that the ERG can function as a research community/network through which students can support and hear about each other's research.

The ERG comprises alternating transferable skills workshops, in which a specific aspect of research training (e.g. dissemination of research findings) is addressed in-depth, and student-led sessions, in which research students are asked to present their research (appropriate to the stage the project is at). The student sessions are intended as a friendly, informal forum in which to practice oral communication skills, as well as to discuss uncertainties or developments in your research process. Both types of sessions emphasise student participation and sharing of any previous and current experiences.
