Self efficacy and learning disability interventions in primary school children

Wednesday 27 May 2015, 1.00PM to 2.00 pm

Speaker(s): Helena Viholainen, PhD Pilvi Peura, M.Ed Department of Education/Special Education, University of Jyväskylä, Finland

Learning disabilities (LDs) are well-known early risk factors for educational drop-out and marginalization. Studies on LDs have shown that in addition to cognitive factors, affective and motivational factors also play a role in skill development. Self-efficacy beliefs have been shown to have a central role in determining individual's task engagement, effort and motivation. However, interventions on LDs have almost exclusively focused on cognitive, skill-specific aspects of LDs. The main objective of the project is to assess the effect of explicit interventions on self-efficacy beliefs and on basic academic skills (reading and math fluency) in children with LDs.
