Research Assessment Exercise 2008

The RAE measures the quality of research in different subjects in UK universities. The results confirm the research position of the University in the top 10 in the UK.

In the Economics Department 100% of our economics research is of international quality (2* and above), according to the RAE, with 60% of the research defined as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' (3* and above). This research is spread over all our key areas.

York is ranked 8th for Economics according to research power in RAE 2008. Research 'power' measures the international quality (given by the grade point average of all outputs, 2.75 for York economics) and also the volume of research undertaken(1). It is an important measure because it reflects the scope and influence of research, as well as providing the basis on which research funding will be allocated in March 2009.

York has consistently performed in the top 10 in the RAE exercises for economics (5A in 2001, 1996 and 1992), with a continuous policy of inclusive submission of staff.

(1) Research power is defined as the product of the grade point average for submitted outputs and the number academic staff FTE submitted.
