Overview

The Department of Sociology at York is today recognised as one of the leading teaching and research centres for the discipline in the United Kingdom. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise we were ranked joint first, with the majority of our research judged to be either ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. This excellence in research directs our teaching throughout our undergraduate programme. It does not matter if you have not studied sociology before as the first year of this programme is made up of foundational modules that are designed to cover the core methodological and theoretical skills needed to think sociologically. The second and third years then offer students a wide-range of optional modules that are taught by members of the Department who are producing cutting-edge research in these fields.
