Research in the Department

The Department has wide-ranging research interests in the literature of all historical periods of English and related literatures. Research is divided into four major areas - the Medieval, Renaissance, Eighteenth Century/Romantics and Modern Schools.

Members of staff are actively involved in various interdisciplinary research centres.

Within the Department, Lawrence Rainey is the Commissioning Editor of Modernism/Modernity, the leading international journal of modernist studies, editing one to two issues of the journal per year and also running the book review section, which appears quarterly.

Geoffrey Wall is an editor of The Cambridge Quarterly. William Sherman is Associate Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly, the journal of record in the field of Shakespeare. Elizabeth Tyler is General Editor of 'Studies in the Early Middle Ages', an interdisciplinary publication series covering Western Europe from Late Antiquity to the twelfth century.
