Dr Nicholas Worsfold

BSc (London), PhD (Sheffield): Teaching Fellow

Nicholas joined Environment in autumn 2008 from the Department of Politics, University of York, where he was a Research Assistant on a project investigating the environmental credentials of the European Parliament. Nicholas trained as an ecologist, completing his PhD at the University of Sheffield, where he investigated the consequences of extinction in experimental food webs. Whilst completing his PhD, funding from the British Ecological Society allowed Nicholas to work for the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, where he wrote a briefing paper for the UK Parliament on the fate of farmland wildlife.

Description of Research Activities

Nicholas is motivated by the need to understand the rapid changes that are occurring to the natural environment and has research interests in community ecology, biodiversity conservation and environmental policy. Current research, in collaboration with Jon Lovett, focuses on the integration of ecosystem services into conservation planning. Other current work seeks to evaluate how the European Parliament treats environmental legislation and investigates whether EU enlargement has affected environmental legislation. Past research investigated the effects of species loss from food webs, using experimental aquatic microcosms containing bacteria and protists. Removal experiments were conducted in these micro-ecosystems in order to understand the effect of the initial removal on community dynamics and ecosystem properties and to investigate the prevalence of secondary ‘cascading’ extinctions.
