Safety Signs (2)
The Department aims to provide a safe and healthy work environment
where all risks are well managed and reduced to an acceptable level by
taking reasonable precautions. We also aim to adopt a sensible approach to risk
management. Indeed, the risks to you from working in this
Department should form a small fraction of the overall risks that you
accept and experience as part of your everyday life! The Biology
Health & Safety Web Pages are the primary source of safety advice
for the Department of Biology. Please don't hesitate to ask for
more advice and guidance and remember that it is the responsibility of
everyone to think about the safety of their work before they start it!
David Nelson (Health & Safety Advisor)
The Department of Biology is committed to ensuring the Health, Safety and Welfare of all its staff, visitors and students, so far as is reasonably practicable. It also fully accepts its responsibility for other persons who may be affected by its activities.
Appropriate steps are taken to fulfil these objectives, including the provision of suitable information, instruction, training or supervision to enable work activities to be carried out safely. Members of staff having specialist competence are appointed to ensure compliance with statutory duties. Arrangements are also made to enable all workers in the department, and their representatives, to raise health and safety issues.
The successful implementation of this policy requires the commitment of all members of the department and its visitors, and, for those responsible for generating specific hazards, to take ownership and management of them. The department will adopt an open and positive attitude towards health and safety, an attitude which involves a shared perception of the importance of safety, and the sharing of information without an undue emphasis on the assignment of blame.
The details of departmental organisation and arrangements for health, safety and welfare are set out in relevant sections of this departmental safety web site. The effectiveness of safety management in the department will be monitored and revised as and when necessary.
