The medical cryobiology unit carries out research on basic mammalian cryobiology and applies that knowledge to the development of preservation techniques for cells, tissues and organs of medical interest. Current areas of study include the identification of the factors that, in general, make it more difficult to cryopreserve tissues and organs than isolated cells. Specific areas of study include mechanisms and patterns of ice crystallization in tissues, the development of cryopreservation methods that avoid the crystallization of ice by inducing vitrification, the role of thermal stress particularly in aqueous glasses, and the use of dielectric heating. The tissues currently studied include corneas, arteries and articular cartilage. The Unit houses the Editorial Office of the journal CRYOBIOLOGY. The research is financed by UK research councils and charities.
