ENGLAND

Scorton, N Yorkshire (FAS) Since 1993, a late Iron age and Romano-British landscape being investigated in advance of mineral extraction. Sponsored by: Tilcon

Sutton Hoo Research Project, Suffolk (Carver and Hummler). Since 1983. WALES

Castell Henllys, Dyfed (Mytum) Since 1980. Research, survey and excavation of an Iron Age inland promontory fort and adjacent Romano-British farmstead, with possible post-Roman occupation. Reconstruction of Iron Age buildings, experimental archaeology. Survey and trial excavation on sites in the area to provide regional context. North Pembrokeshire (Mytum) Since 1985. Research, survey and excavation of historic sites (farmsteads, cottages, mills of 18th-20th c), and survey of contemporary graveyards and their monuments to examine use of material culture in a well documented context. Dolforwyn Castle, Powys (Butler) Since 1981. Research, survey and excavation of a late medieval prince's castle, later occupied by the Mortimers (1277-1390). Survey of adjacent town. SCOTLAND

Tarbat Research Project (Martin Carver and Field Archaeology Specialists Ltd). Since 1994, research, survey and excavation of a 1st millenium AD (Pictish) settlement site and definition of an early historic kingdom in the Moray firthlands. The Viking Age Transitions Project (James Barrett) Since 1997. A study combining excavation (at Quoygrew, Orkney), field survey and laboratory analyses to investigate the relationship between six aspects of Viking Age Scotland: Scandinavian colonisation, the intensification of production, the development of trade in commodities, the centralisation of authority, the growth of urbanism and the adoption of Christian ideology. ABROAD

Lambaesis, Algeria (Roskams) Selective excavation and survey of the Roman town, mainly focusing on the temple complex of Aesculapius and the adjacent Flavian camp. The main fieldwork is complete; stratigraphic analysis and specialist finds work will continue until 1995 followed by publication, either in Algeria or via the British Academy.

Achir, Algeria (Carver, with D Souidi) 1992-4. Evaluation of early Islamic sites in the Achir basin. Sponsored by: Agence National des Monuments et Sites, Centre National des Etudes Historiques, Musee National. Publication: Arch‚ologie Islamique 6

Saint Antonin-sur-Bayon, Provence, France (Hummler). Since 1992. Evaluation of a late Iron Age hillfort (125-50BC).
