Profile

Professor Roger Bowles is Professor of Economics at the University of York and Director of the Centre for Criminal Justice Economics and Psychology. Roger has extensive experience in the design and management of major research projects in the criminal justice field. He has managed studies including ‘Costs and Benefits of Sentencing Options' (completed for the Home Office in March 2004) and ‘Monitoring and Evaluating the Safer Schools Partnerships Programme' (completed for the Youth Justice Board in June 2005). He is currently managing two major projects, namely Mainstreaming Methodology for Estimating the Costs of Crime (for the EC, 2007-08) and a Prevention Cohort Study (for the Youth Justice Board, 2007-2009). Roger was Principal Investigator on a number of projects completed in 2008 including a comparative review of legal aid for the Ministry of Justice and on developing, with Mark Cohen, a Model of Pre-Trial Detention for the Open Society Justice Initiative (New York).

Other activities

Roger is a member of the Futurebuilders Evaluation Research Steering Group based at the Office of the Third Sector.

Roger was President of the European Association of Law and Economics, 2007-08.
