Two international musicians with long-established careers in both early and contemporary music open our Rymer Nights series. Maya Homburger and Barry Guy combine their outstanding talents in Biber’s solo sonatas juxtaposed with Barry Guy’s improvisations and his music for both instruments.

‘The results are compelling because Homburger and Guy approach Biber’s works not as time-capsule relics but as a living music that can – should – be interpreted freely.  By emphasising the intensified colour Biber obtained through scordatura [retuning of strings for special effects], the duo stakes out a fertile common ground between the two composers.’  Bill Shoemaker
