The gamelan (a collection of tuned Javanese percussion instruments and gongs) is joined by Humber Taiko and the University’s samba band for exciting Japanese-Javanese collaborations, Yorkshire style. Pupils from Tang Hall SMART will also showcase their recent work with the Taiko group. Ritual music and faraway sounds feature a sago fertility ritual from New Guinea with dancers, flutes and gamelan. A truly colourful evening, dedicated to the memory of Tentrem Sarawanto who made Gamelan Sekar Petak in Java in 1981.
