Data protection and Freedom of Information

The University has a Records Manager who can be contacted for help and advice on Data Protection and Freedom of Information.

Data protection

The Data Protection Act governs our use of personal data and aims to protect the privacy of individuals in relation to personal information held about them.

It covers the collection, storage, processing, security and disclosure of personal information, including details collected, maintained or displayed on the web.

Freedom of information

The Freedom of Information Act establishes 'the right to know', making it easier for people to access information held by public authorities like the University.

It improves the public's access to information in two ways:

  • The University produces a publication scheme - a guide to all the information we are committed to making available to the public.
  • The University provides public access to any information held by us, subject to the information being held, unless one of the Act's exemptions applies.
