Advertising (paid or unpaid) is not allowed on any of the University of York websites: that is, all sites on the york.ac.uk domain, including subdomains and personal pages on www-users.york.ac.uk.
A distinction is made between advertising and sponsorship.
Sponsorship implies mutually-beneficial cooperation in projects and other initiatives, where funding or resources given from outside the University supports the work of the partner department. Advertising is an inducement to buy a product or service and displaying advertising could be considered as endorsement.
Sponsor's logos may be included in appropriate places on a department's web page. This recognises the existence of a working relationship between the department or office and the sponsor (e.g. research project, prize or bursary funders). There is guidance on co-branding in the Visual Identity Guidelines.
