About the player

The player requires no more to run than is needed to view YouTube videos. Specifically, the player requires that the browser has Adobe Flash plugin version 9.0.0 or later, although playback of MPEG-4 (H.264/AAC) files require version 9.0.115 (shipped in late 2007). This version of Flash supported on Internet Explorer 6.0+, Firefox FF 2+, Safari 2.0+ and Opera 9.0+, on Windows, Macs and Linux, though performance may vary by platform.

The player supports the following encodings and formats:

  • all variants of video, audio and metadata that can be stored in a Flash video file (.flv)
  • H.264/HE-AAC encoded content stored in an MPEG-4 file (.f4v, .mp4, .m4a, .mov, .m4v, .mp4v, .3gp, and .3g2)
  • MP3 encoded audio and metadata stored in an MP3 audio file (.mp3)

Accessibility

The player provides access to keyboard accessible controls for use by those with disabilities, by means of the red "Accessible controls" link beneath the player. It also supports use of captions supplied via the web in either SubRip or W3C Timed Text. Over time we hope to improve the usability of the player to make it possible to e.g. change the display size via the keyboard.

Usage tracking

The player uses Google Analytics to track usage, including pause and seek events.
