Trooping the colour

Join the Wentworth Provost to watch Trooping the Colour 'Celebration of the Queen's official birthday' on 15th June from 11.30am to 1.30pm in the Graduate Common Room.  FREE tea and cakes.

MasterChef competition

Are you proud of your country's food? Do you like to cook a favourite dish? 

Enter the Wentworth MasterChef cooking competition. 

To apply complete the online form by Tuesday 28 May.  The successful applications will be contacted to cook a plate of food on Monday 3 June from 6pm.

3 finalists will be chosen and will recook their dish on Thursday 6 June from 6pm.

Great prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  See event for full details and rules of the competition.

Over the Sea to Skye

Talk by Dr Katherine Selby (Environment Department) 10 June at 1pm in Staff and Graduate Common Room (W/135). 

Come along and listen to Katherine's Palaeoenvironmental and archaeological investigations at Point of Sleat on the Isle of Skye.

Did you know....

  • you no longer need to wash your bottles/tubs etc before recycling
  • you can now recycle clingfilm with plastics. See What are my recycling responsibilities? for up to date information, whilst you are there have a look at the college handbook which is now online

Coming soon to the Graduate Common Room (W/024)....

This common room is the social hub of the college and already has 2 table tennis tables, a table football game, a range of board games, a TV and DVD player plus seating areas.

Available soon:

  • a new 50" Fulll HD LED TV with built in Wi-Fi and freeview HD  for gaming (leaving the other TV for watching TV's/movies
  • a Playstation 3 plus 2 controllers
  • a range of PS3 games
  • a range of DVD's
  • exercise bike for those of you who want to exercise whilst watching TV or socialising with friends - this was won by the college for best performance at the Chinese Gala

Free weekly classes

We are pleased to announce that the following weekly classes will continue during the summer term, a big thanks to the instructors and all postgraduates that support these classes:-

Street Jazz dance class

Every Monday in Graduate Common room (W/024) - 6.30pm - 7.30pm until 10 June

Salsa dance class

Every Thursday in Graduate Common room (W/024) - 7pm - 8.30pm from 9 May to 20 June (this start date has changed from 2 May, sorry about this)

Wing-Chun class

Every Sunday in Staff and Graduate Common room (W/135) - 3pm - 4.30pm until 23 June

Facilities summary 

Painting of Wentworth Blocks - painting in Wentworth College has been postponed.  The painting reschedule will be communicated shortly.

Fire risk assessments - some of you have been contacted this week with the outcome of the fire risk assessments.  Please ensure that you comply with the residence terms and conditions as stated.

Walmgate - Water compliance will clean the water tanks on 24 May at 11am

For all facilities communications, the residents impacted have been emailed directly with full details.

Other News

Campus bars are open at 5pm

From next week until week 8 (exam time) all campus bars will be open 30 minutes early at 5pm.

Get on your bike for York@50

Students, staff, alumni and the local community are taking part in the York@50 Bike ride on 2 June to mark the 50 anniversary of the University of York. For details see York@50.

Changes to Bus Service 4

From Sunday 7 July, Service 4 will no longer serve Innovation Way, Church Lane or Field Lane.  Buses will drop off at the stop on University Road opposite Heslington Hall.

Thursday 23 May - free bus day to Monks Cross, catch the bus at Hes Hall bus stop or Hes East Interchange

National Housing Survey

This year the University is taking part in the National Housing Survey. The Survey gives students in both University and private sector accommodation the chance to give feedback on their accommodation experience and gives the university information in order to see where it should be focusing to make improvements. 

  

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and there is the chance to win a brand new iPad Retina or one of several cash runner-up prizes!

GSA News

GSA/ISA coffee afternoons

Every Wednesday, during the Summer Term, from 2.15pm--3.15pm at the Courtyard.  Completely free event to give you a break from the stress of exam revision and grab a free coffee and muffin on us!

Free Bulgarian classes

A postgrad student is providing free bulgarian classes every Wednesday during term-time. No experience necessary – please just come along!

Sessions are from 1800-1900 in Wentworth College. 15 May -W35c, from 22 May to 26 June - W301.

Alcuin SCR are hosting a University quiz on events in 2012

Teams of 4, entry fee is £5 per person and all proceeds will go to Martin House Hospice for Children.

Food provided but please bring your own wine, beer or soft drinks.  The quiz will take place on Tuesday 21st of May 7:30 pm at Café Barista.  Please email natalie.kopytko@york.ac.uk with your team and affiliation. Places are limited.
