VANBRUGH COLLEGE HANDBOOK

Welcome to Vanbrugh College - A Message from The Provost

Handbook Contents

For some of you consulting this handbook, it will be at the beginning of your time at York and the start of a new stage in your life, representing the first break from home, family, and familiar neighbourhood. For others it may represent the next stage as a returning, graduate, or mature student. In each case, the college system at York is here to help you realize your hopes and aspirations about your time at University and to provide opportunities to widen intellectual, social, and personal horizons.

The college system is essentially an open one, with few compulsions and many opportunities. It provides an easy and friendly basis on which to form a circle of friends and acquaintances within a relatively small community and distinct from academic departments. For those confused or worried, it provides an accessible system of support on a personal basis through the College Welfare Team. For those liking involvement, it offers additional social, volunteering, musical, and sporting opportunities as well as posts of responsibility on the Junior Common Room and Graduate Common Room Committees. Fundamentally, the College enables groups and individuals to meet and mix in ways different from academic departments, campus-wide clubs, societies or through competitive sport, making the most of their time at the University.

I hope that you will settle in quickly and that life at the University will match your hopes and expectations. If you have any problems, however apparently trivial, I hope you will approach me or my colleagues in the College, and we will do our best to help. During the first few weeks, I look forward to meeting you at my supper parties and receptions.

I wish you an enjoyable and rewarding time at York.
