College Tutors

Our College Tutors are the first point of contact for residents if they have any questions or concerns during their time in Goodricke College.  They are expected to visit all flats in their respective courts on a regular basis to ensure that residents are happy.  They are also expected to participate fully in all events run by the College.

If necessary, College Tutors will refer residents on to senior members of the College Welfare Team (Provost, Deputy Provost or Dean) for further support.

College Tutors (October 2011 onwards)

Mihai Cocoru

College Tutor

Mihai is undertaking a PhD in Politics. He received a BA in History from the University of Bucharest and an MA in Conflict, Governance and Development from the Univeristy of York. Mihai is an aspiring diplomat/professor/politician/writer/autocrat and, as you can see, his goal in life is quite certain… that is if he ever gets a real job somewhere… anywhere.

In his spare time, Mihai likes to listen to classical music, have BBQs and talk to his friends about international events. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to ask Mihai about his research, as he would start talking for hours, getting more enthusiastic as he goes.

Word on the street (Heslington East alleys, that is) is that he also plays computer games, but Mihai has always denied this allegation. Also, evidence suggests that he is secretly plotting the creation of the first pro-smoking, anti-cycling, pub-crawling Society on campus. Again, he has always denied such claims.

Mihai lives in Oliver Sheldon Court, Flat 22, Rm 215 and can be contacted on 714319 (internal no.) or mc613@york.ac.uk.

Suzy Dodd

College Tutor

Suzy has been very involved with college and university life since arriving at York. Despite the modest expectations of her earlier tutors, she will be studying for an MA in Modern and Contemporary Literature and Culture, and has far too many soft spots for authors from Beckett through to Tao Lin.

When she's not sat over a tea and a book, Suzy tends to idle her time away finding new music, or old music she missed the first time round. She also likes walking, and thinks it's only a matter of time before her baking becomes edible.

Suzy lives in Janet Baker Court, A2/271 and can be contacted on 714272 (internal no.) or sd566@york.ac.uk.

Rosa Kwok

College Tutor

Rosa is from Hong Kong and has been a student at York for several years. She is currently undertaking a PhD in Psychology, mainly focusing on word learning differences between typical and dyslexics adults.

In addition to her study, Rosa is also enthusiastic about music. In her spare time, she loves playing the piano and flute. She believes every performance is unique and individual. There is no harmony if everyone sings the same note and that’s what she always reminds herself while working with others.

Rosa is also keen on sports. She enjoys pole dancing and the strength, confidence and flexibility that it gives. She also loves swimming (you may find her in Yearsley Swimming Pool). Having been actively involved with sport in York for a number of years, she is likely to be able to answer any questions you have about keeping fit at University.

Rosa lives in Kenneth Dixon Court, Rm A244; telephone 714201 (internal no.) or email kwrk500@york.ac.uk.

How do I become a College Tutor?

Every April, the University runs a recruitment drive for all (existing and future) postgraduate students interested in becoming college tutors.  Although the number of tutors varies from college to college, there are usually vacancies in most.

Please note that applicants for College Tutor posts must:

  • be a full-time registered postgraduate student at the University of York for the year of study (e.g. 2012-13).  Unfortunately, for legal reasons, part-time students are not eligible.
  • not be in their “writing-up year“ of a PhD programme.
  • not be studying for a PGCE or other programme involving lengthy placements (please disclose any likely placements or travel in the application form).

College Tutors are expected to work an average of 15 hours a week for the college.  They are required to live in College and are provided with a room.  Tutors rooms are for single occupancy.  Partners or spouses are welcome to stay as guests in accordance with College rules (please see our FAQ section for more information) but the rooms are not suitable for regular occupation by a partner or spouse.  Please note that no family accommodation is available.

Further information on becoming a tutor can be obtained from the College Administrator (sarah.hay@york.ac.uk) or College Dean (paul.summers@york.ac.uk).

Please note that the deadline for applications for the 2012/13 academic year has now passed.
