A student’s view

How do I even begin to put into words how amazing my last two years as a member of Goodricke College have been...? Most simply, I have loved every second of it!

Every College claims to have the best ‘spirit’ at York, but none of them compare with Goodricke’s legendary college spirit! What gives us such great spirit, year after year, is the enthusiasm of everyone in Goodricke, both students and staff, and the feeling of comradeship. One example of this which springs to mind is the annual RAG parade, something not to be missed!

I think it’s pretty fair to say that Goodricke puts on socials that no other college can possibly rival! This year alone we had an amazingly messy punch party and Goodricke Army social, followed by an equally amazing Rave social, an epic night out in Newcastle, and a fantastic weekend in Amsterdam! Closer to home, the Entertainments team have done some great events on campus, including the legendary Jailbreak, with some brilliant themes such as ‘I love the 90s’ and ‘Cirque de Kirk’ which were both huge successes!

How do I even begin to put into words how amazing my last two years as a member of Goodricke College have been...? Most simply, I have loved every second of it!

Last year I was a Welfare Rep on the JCRC (Junior Common Room Committee), which has been without a doubt one of the best things I’ve done since coming to uni, and I would strongly recommend it to everyone! I’ve made some amazing friends, had some fantastic socials, and I love being able to have my say and be part of the decision-making which affects everyday college life.

Here in Goodricke we pride ourselves on having such an amazing welfare team who offer invaluable support. Each block is lucky enough to have at least one block tutor. We have Paul, our Dean, who will be living in Janet Baker Court and we have Jane, the Provost, and Gill, the College Administrator*. They are very approachable, and are always there for anyone who may have a problem.

I’m sure that during your time at uni you will miss certain home comforts, such as a big comfy sofa or a TV. Fortunately we have a Junior Common Room and a General Common Room with some brilliant facilities, including big comfy sofas, TVs (now with Sky TV!), DVD players, a Wii, a PS3, an X-box, a pool table (perhaps not a usual home comfort but fun nonetheless!), board games, the list goes on!  These rooms also play host to some great events such as punch parties, film and pizza nights, games nights, and much more.

I can’t believe I’m having to say goodbye to Goodricke for a year – I’m doing a year abroad as part of my course – I’m going to miss everyone so so much! But I’m sure that when I come back for my final year, I will continue to have just as much fun as I have done in the last couple of years.
