Arrivals 2012

Please note that this page will be updated throughout Summer 2012.

Before you arrive

Read about your accommodation block (Janet Baker Court, Kenneth Dixon Court or Oliver Sheldon Court).

Check your arrival details:

  • The first day of term for undergraduates is Monday 8 October 2012.  Please note that we expect all residents to have arrived by Saturday 6th October.  This may be different from other colleges.
  • The first day of term for postgraduates may vary, so do check with your academic department whether you are expected to attend any departmental induction meetings, and when they may be.
  • Arrival day for international students on pre-sessional orientation programmes is Wednesday 3 October 2012.  Please click here for more details.

You may want to have a look at the web pages for the Junior Common Room (for undergraduates) or General Common Room (for graduates). There is also a College Facebook Group you may wish to join.

On the day of arrival

We now have around 600 students living in the College. This naturally presents some challenges with everyone arriving at once, so each year we try to help manage the weekend, help you to get settled in more quickly and have the earliest opportunity to become involved in the life of the College.

Accommodation at Goodricke College is not available before your specified arrival date/time in October 2012.  Please do not arrive early because your room will not be available.

Please arrive at the designated times below.

Welcome and Fire & Safety Talk

This is a compulsory talk for all new students and for all residents living in university accommodation.

Welcome Drinks Reception

Ron Cooke Hub 5pm - 6pm

Come for a drink and nibble to meet your Goodricke College staff and students.

When you arrive, there will be people in College to greet you and to make you feel welcome. You'll meet the key staff: the Provost, Administrator, Dean and your College Tutors.

This is a self-catered college and you are therefore recommended to bring sufficient amounts of essential items (e.g. bread, milk, cereal) to last you over the Arrivals Weekend.  Unless you have pre-ordered bedding, you will need to bring this with you.

Unipacks

The University hves teamed up with Unipack who supply all-in-one starter packs for students to purchase before arriving in October.  Their website can be accessed by clicking here.  Please note that the University and College takes no responsibility for any transactions carried out with Unipack.

If you have been allocated to a studio room, please check with the College Administrator whether you have a double or twin-bedded room.  There are only a limited number of the former available.

Returning Students

Returning students who, in addition to being resident in the College, are also undertaking duties as STYCs (Second or Third Year Contacts) are requested to move in to the College on 6 October.

Returning resident students who are not acting as STYCs during Freshers’ Welcome Week are invited to move in to the College at any point on Saturday, 6 October or up to 12.00 noon on Sunday, 7 October 2012 at the very latest.

All residents of Goodricke College (new and returning students) are required to attend the compulsory College briefings on Sunday 9 October, which will be held in Central Hall (Heslington West Campus) at 2pm.

If you cannot arrive at these times

If your allocated arrival slot is not convenient for you, please contact our College Administrator (tel: (01904) 325113 so that we know to expect you at a different time.

Car Parking

If you are arriving by car, you'll need some time to register, collect your keys, unload your vehicle and transfer your possessions to your room. You will be directed to the car park by a member of the Security Team. Our Second and Third Year Contacts (STYCs) will help you with your luggage to your room.  Small trolleys are available.  You will be charged a £10 deposit if you wish to use a trolley.

Please be aware that the car parking is limited and the College will be unusually busy during Arrivals Weekend.  We ask that residents and their families vacate the car park as quickly as possible so that all residents are able to move into their rooms without excessive delay.

See our Getting to Goodricke page for more detailed instructions on how to get to Goodricke College.
