During term, our College Administrator, Sarah Hay, sends regular emails to all Goodricke students. This contains the latest news, messages from members of the JCRC or College Staff and reminders about forthcoming events. A summary of the main points in the newsletter are also displayed on this page.
Thank you to all those who attended the Anniversary Lecture last Monday on ‘the role of nature and nature in children’s language development’ in the Ron Cook Hub, it was so well attended we ran out of chairs. The lecture raised lots of interesting questions and feedback received was very positive. Huge thanks to Emma for delivering such an interesting topic.

In order to link these people together, the accommodation office has produced a website to advertise campus rooms or look for rooms in both the University and private sectors. To view these pages please follow the link:

This is often the most popular walk of the year - a beautiful coastal walk from Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay finishing with fish & chips (costs approx £7.50) by the sea and a few drinks in the local pub. The walk will be approximately 6-7 miles so please wear flat, comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing. Feel free to bring a picnic if you would prefer to take your own food. There are sandwiches and ice-creams available to buy locally too.
The coach will leave at 9am from the lay-by behind Janet Baker Court and return to the University around 5pm.
There is no charge to join us for the walk but we do ask for a £5 returnable deposit on the day if you would like to come so that we have numbers for the coach.
Please drop into my office in the Goodricke nucleus with your deposit if you would like a seat reserving on the coach. We are filling up already so don’t miss out!
Friends and family welcome too.
Monday 14th May saw the launch of the first ever student only trading website. U-meSwap.co.uk uses the University of York’s campus to encourage students to trade items they no longer use, saving them money and reducing waste.
During the first two weeks (ending 28th May), U-meSwap is running a university wide competition where by the JCRC that gets the highest percentage signed up (and fill in the college info box) will win £250! Students must use their @york.ac.uk email address to register.
After registration, you will be able to upload and browse items. If you find something you would like all you have to do I make an offer for it. After a trade agreement has been made students will arrange a time and place to meet up to complete the trade.
You are encouraged to submit anything from text books to pens and pencils. If you don’t use it but think someone could, upload it and wait for the bids to come rolling in.
So don’t delay and go to www.u-meswap.co.uk and register for free now!
Nick, one of your Goodricke Porters has asked for your support in sending rat packs parcels to Soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Should you like to donate anything to this cause, please contact Nick on the Hub Reception desk.
These parcels are a vital morale booster to our guys over there who are a long way from home, the simplest thing to us can make a world of difference to them. Thanks Nick
That’s all from me, good luck with your revision and exams and don’t forget your friendly tutors are available for a cup and a chat should you need a break.

I wonder what the good old British weather has in store for us this week; will it be rain, sunshine or just grey cloud? I really wish it would make up its mind.
Anyhow what do we have in store for you next week?

The University is launching a Summer Reading Programme for 2012. This will involve all new undergraduates being encouraged to read the same book before they come. Discussion Group Leaders will be selected from among students in Colleges to lead discussion groups which on the book itself, and the wider themes that it suggests. Discussion topics will be suggested by the group that makes the final decision about the title that is chosen and Discussion Group Leaders will be encouraged to come up with more stimulating events that link to the book’s theme and contents if they wish.
A group of staff and students will decide which of the books nominated by students will become the summer text for 2012. We will encourage all new first year students to read it via the new You at York site for new students. We don’t expect that everyone – or even the majority - will read it, but hope that enough students are attracted by the idea of having something different to discuss with their new College mates and will enjoy reading what York students have recommended for them.
For more information or to nominate a book by the deadline 25th May, please click on the link below:
http://www.york.ac.uk/about/departments/support-and-admin/academic-registry/summer-reading/
Anyone looking for an afternoon out or are willing to volunteer on the day take a look on the Stroke Association website www.stepoutuk.org or look out for any of the posters around campus. For more information please contact smp520@york.ac.uk
That’s all for now, have a great weekend.

To silence her stubborn hiccups during the summer of 2010, Mallory Kievman tried swallowing saltwater, making herself gag, eating a spoonful of sugar, sipping pickle juice and drinking a glass of water upside-down. Nearly two years and 100 attempted folk remedies later, the 13-year-old is preparing to lead a team of M.B.A. students from the University of Connecticut in building a company that can bring her invention — Hiccupops, or hiccup-stopping lollipops — to market this summer.
She had developed the product in her family’s Manchester, Conn., kitchen, amalgamating her three favorite cures — lollipops, apple cider vinegar and sugar — into a single confection. “It triggers a set of nerves in your throat and mouth that are responsible for the hiccup reflex arc,” said Mallory with a matter-of-fact tone. “It basically over-stimulates those nerves and cancels out the message to hiccup.”
Dear all,
Thank you for the great turn out last night to welcome the Roses torch in the Hub, it was much appreciated. So if you’re interested in STYC-ing please come along to find out a bit more about what the role involves and how to apply. The event is combined for Langwith & Goodricke because we’re going to be working really closely over the coming months to make sure the move to Hes East is as easy as possible for Langwith and they can come to realise how great it is to be part of the new campus so we want you all to meet each other.
The event is not compulsory for STYC applicants but it is MASSIVELY IMPORTANT that you attend, as it will have a significant impact on your application as well as give you all the information you need to apply effectively and become a great STYC.

Motorola has been granted an injunction against the distribution of key Microsoft products in Germany. The sales ban covers the Xbox 360 games console, Windows 7 system software, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player, claiming that Microsoft has infringed two patents necessary to offer H.264 video coding and playback.

Now that the torch has been designed and made, it’s time to carry it to Lancaster to mark the start of Roses 2012. Two relays will occur in week 2 to not only get the torch to Lancaster but to raise money and awareness for the York RAG beneficiaries.
The Roses Torch will be carried around campus to celebrate the making of the torch and to honour the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games happening in London this summer.
The campus relay will involve 13 people who have made a significant difference to York/college sport and will take place on Thursday 3rd May between 6:30pm and 8:30pm. A full list on what is occurring when and where is given below.
The Security team are increasingly commenting that the JCRC fire doors are being left open at night. Please can you be extra vigilant and ensure that these doors are locked at night as it is leaving the Goodricke facilities vulnerable to theft. If our TVs and gaming equipment get stolen we will not have the funds to replace them - which would be a real pity.

Academics from The York Management School have teamed up with Safer York Partnership, North Yorkshire Police and City of York Council and are looking for your help with an exciting new research project that could shape how North Yorkshire Police and the Council allocate their resources around York.
They are asking as many current and recent York residents as possible to complete the following survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/UoY-attitudes which should take less than 10 minutes to complete. The survey is designed to give residents in York the chance to express their views on crime, the fear of crime, confidence and their views on policing. As a thank you for your time, you can choose to be entered into a draw to win one of two £50 Amazon.co.uk vouchers.
The survey is a great opportunity to let local bodies know how you feel about the issues that matter to you and is a chance for you to make a real difference in making the city of York an even safer area than it already is. For more information about the survey, please see the Safer York Partnership website

(Normally eggs are passed out of a hen's body and incubated outside until the chick hatches. However, in this case, the egg was incubated inside the hen for 21 days before hatching. Unfortunately the poor hen died from the birth, but the chick survived and is said to be healthy and fully formed.
Of course this all means that the age old conundrum of which came first - the chicken or the egg has finally been answered.)
Welcome back to Goodricke!
I hope you have had a pleasant Easter break; it’s certainly been quiet round here without you, though the Easter bunny has kept me company with her many chocolate delights.
Summer term starts today and I am sure for many of you, it is far from a relaxing start what with essays due in and exams to revise for so a huge good luck to you all.
Here are a few things below to ease you back in gently:

The metal mixed recycling bins are for paper, card, cans and plastics (not glass). Next to each mixed recycling bin will be a general waste bin and a glass waste bin.
There has been a delay with the printing of new labels for the bins and so for a few days some of the bins will not be correctly labelled. During these days please feel free to use either metal bin.
Please note: Over the next two weeks all plastic bins will be removed, so please do not use them.
The move to mixed recycling has been made to encourage the use of recycling bins. Studies have shown that moving away from asking people to sort recycling materials at point of disposal to a mixed recycling system can increase participation by 25%.
Please help us to increase our recycling rates by using the new metal bins provided

(Many people did not know the "dickie birds" (words), and the meaning of once-popular phrases like "pig's ear" (beer), "bacon and eggs" (legs) and "bricks and mortar" (daughter) have been lost, "apples and pears" (stairs) was the most well-known Cockney phrase (78%) but only 9% of respondents said they used it in the last six months. "Porky pies" (lies) ranked as the most commonly used expression - but only 13% said it had come out of their "north and south" (mouth) In fact other forms of slang are taking over and words like "OMG," "epic fail" and "wicked" currently rule the London lexicon.)
