Types of let

38 weeks

Students occupy the rooms from October through to July (and pay the rent accordingly), including the Christmas and Easter vacations.

51 weeks

These lets permit students to remain in University accommodation for the entire academic year (October to September).

Transferring 51 week lets to other students

Please note that 51 week lets continue throughout the summer, even though undergraduate students will have finished their courses for the academic year.  Having accepted this offer of accommodation, students are committed to paying for 51 week let unless they are able to find another student willing to assume the contract over the summer period.

Students wishing to vacate should inform either the Accommodation Office or the College Administrator, Gill MacDonald, and provide details of the student they have found to take on the remainder of the contract.  The University then reserves the right to nominate a replacement and has up to one week in which to do so.  If a student in greater need of the accommodation than the suggested replacement is found by the University, the contract will be assumed by the former.

The student wishing to take on the remainder of a 51 week contract must:

  • be studying full-time at the University of York
  • be registered as an undergraduate student (if replacing an undergraduate)
  • be registered as a postgraduate student (if replacing a postgraduate)
  • not currently be living in University accommodation
  • not be in debt to the University.
  • ensure that Goodricke College does not oppose his or her application to become a resident.
  • pay £200 advance payment fee and accept the agreement before the original agreement can be terminated.

Residents are not permitted to sub-let their room.  They must arrange with the Accommodation Office for the new resident to accept the terms and conditions for the room.  If they do not do so, and allow the student to live in the room, the original resident remains responsible for:

  • payment to the University for the accommodation
  • any damages to the room caused by the new resident
  • any breaches of the terms and conditions by the new resident
  • breaching the terms and conditions of their original contract by allowing the new resident to reside in College without permission.

A cleaning charge of £50 will be raised on the outgoing student’s account if the accommodation needs to be brought to an acceptable standard.

Single gender accommodation

In accommodation designated as single-gender only, restrictions apply to overnight visitors of the opposite sex between the hours of midnight and 10.00am the following morning. This means at all other times residents are entitled to invite guests of the opposite sex in to their accommodation.

The University of York strives to create a vibrant and diverse community and we encourage students to negotiate with one another to ensure a comfortable living environment for all.

There is one flat for female undergraduates.
