The beauty about York is everything is in walking distance. Have a look at a map on-line to find a quick way to walk into the city centre. It should take about twenty minutes from campus so add another five to get there from Derwent.
For those who can’t be bothered to walk. There are places to lock up your bike in and around campus. Derwent has secure bike sheds that you can access if you speak to the Porters, and if you plan on keeping a bike in York for any length of time, then this is highly recommended. Remember a bike lock and lights.
For those who can’t be bothered to cycle. The regular number 4 bus runs from campus through town to the station and back. A return costs £2.50 with your student card, which is well worth it considering a single is £1.90. Rather handily for Derwenters there is a bus stop right on our doorstep just outside D Block. There is a late-night bus service between the station and campus that takes all the inebriated students home up until two in the morning.
There are a dozen taxi companies in and around York, many of which offer a student discount.
Do not take risks! If you are coming back from town late at night do get a taxi even if you do not have cash - the Porters will lend you the taxi fare. The loan must be repaid as soon as possible.
Don't bother bringing a car. If you live on campus you cannot get a parking permit unless you have a disability which requires you to have a car with you.
