Accommodation

Derwent College occuppies the original college buildings close to Heslington Hall as well as the Extension just over University Road and Eden's Court close by on Heslington Lane. 

Derwent College provides both catered and self-catered accommodation for undergraduates on 39-week lets, self-catered accommodation for student nurses on 39-week lets, self-catered accommodation for continuing undergraduates on 44-week lets and self-catered accommodation for postgraduates on 51-week lets.

For new undergraduates we offer predominantly large social blocks organised on a corridor style with free movement throughout the block which allow new students to develop extensive social networks. There are both catered and self-catered blocks. We also have a number of self-catered houses which are predominantly for continuing undergraduates, nursing students and postgraduates.

Undergraduate

Derwent College has several types of undergraduate accommodation:

Economy Standard catered accommodation - A, B and M blocks

These are the original accommodation blocks of the College which are built on a 'corridor' layout. Rooms are all different and are generally larger than in later accommodation blocks. These are large social blocks with free movement for residents within the block to encourage the sociability the College is famous for. Rooms in blocks A, B and M are part of the Catered College and a catering package is included in the rent.

Economy En-Suite catered accommodation - P block

P block is one of the original accommodation blocks of the College, again built on a 'corridor' layout. Rooms in P Block are of similar size, and all have en-suite facilities. P block is a large social block with free movement for residents within the block to encourage the sociability the College is famous for. Rooms in block P are part of the Catered College and a catering package is included in the rent.

Economy Standard self-catered accommodation - C, J and K blocks

These are the original accommodation blocks of the College which are built on a 'corridor' layout. Rooms are all different and are generally larger than in later accommodation blocks. These are large social blocks with free movement for residents within the block to encourage the sociability the College is famous for. All rooms are self-catering.

Standard self-catered accommodation – E, F, G and H blocks

E, F, G and H blocks were built in the early 1980s and are just across University Road from the College nucleus. There will be a mixture of under-graduates and post-graduates living in these blocks, so residents in this area need to be considerate of their neighbours and keep noise to a minimum. All rooms are self-catering.

Standard En-Suite self-catered accommodation – E and F blocks

One house in E Block and one house in F block contain en-suite rooms, a total of ten rooms in each house. There will be post-graduates living in the blocks nearby, so residents in this area need to be considerate of their neighbours and keep noise to a minimum. All rooms are self-catering.

Upgraded Standard self-catered accommodation - D block

D block was fully refurbished during the summer of 2011. It is a large social block with free movement of students between floors. The refurbishment included the introduction of a second large kitchen / social area on each floor as well as new showers and study bedrooms. Rooms in D block are self-catering.

Nursing & Midwifery students

Standard self-catered accommodation - Eden's Court

Rooms for Nursing and Midwifery students are located in Eden's Court, which is on Heslington Lane, a mere 5 minute walk away from Derwent College nucleus. Eden's Court has a number of houses built around a garden with its own barbecue site and picnic benches. It is a self-catering area, and rooms are let on a 39-week tenancy. There are also Postgraduate students living in Eden’s Court and private houses immediately adjacent, so all residents need to be considerate of their neighbours and keep noise to a minimum.

Standard self-catered accommodation –F, G and H blocks

E, F, G and H blocks were built in the early 1980s and are just across University Road from the College nucleus. There will be a mixture of under-graduates and post-graduates living in these blocks; post-graduates will live in F block houses 1 and 2, G block house 1, and H block houses 2 and 3; under-graduates will be living in the other individual houses. All students living in this area need to be considerate of their neighbours and keep noise to a minimum. All rooms are self-catering, and post-graduate rooms are let on a 51-week tenancy.

Standard self-catered accommodation - Eden's Court

There are a few post-graduate rooms located in Eden's Court, which is on Heslington Lane, a mere 5 minute walk away from Derwent College nucleus. Eden's Court has a number of houses built around a garden with its own barbecue site and picnic benches. En-suite self-catered couples accommodation – A and K blocks

There are a few flats for post-graduate couples in A and K blocks. These have a bedroom, sitting room and private bathroom but share cooking facilities with other residents. They are located within a large block predominantly inhabited by First Year under-graduates and are close to social spaces, they can therefore be quite noisy at times.
