When new students arrive at Derwent College in October they are met by dozens of 2nd and 3rd years. The STYCs (Second and Third Year Contacts) are around in the blocks for Freshers Fortnight to answer questions and help new members of the college. In addition there is a Block Coordinator for each block who will remain involved with the block all year. In some colleges the college and the college tutors organise social events - in Derwent it is the JCRC.
All of this activity from the JCR provides numerous opportunities for you to get involved and have a good time doing so. Dozens of students were involved in June 2012 in creating decorations and transforming rooms across Derwent into Neverland for Big D 2012. Numerous others were involved in running the event and learnt about organising a major event. Still others organise sports teams and their social events. Involvement in the college provides you with opportunities to gain experience that will make your CV stand out from those of hundreds of other graduates applying for jobs three years from now.
Derwent is the most student run college at York. This is a tradition that is worth preserving. But it depends on you!
There are elections for the JCR committee in the Autumn term each year. Think about getting together with a group of friends to run for a post on the JCRC. Each year we need to elect people onto the JCRC so that they can learn to organise events, run campaigns and negotiate with the University in the next year, and then go on to run the JCRC and organise Big D in the following year.
So please do get involved. There is plenty of scope for involvement whether you hold a JCRC office or not.
I love you Derwent...
