College staff

College Provostships are part-time positions and the Provost Tony Ward is also a member of staff in the Electronics Department. The Deputy Provost is Penn Snowden who is also the Manager of the Disability Services within the University. Whilst often to be found in the College during the day and at weekends, it is sometimes better to arrange an appointment through the College Administrator if you wish to see the Provost or Deputy Provost.

In an emergency, or if you are a student and you find yourself in serious personal difficulty, you can contact the Provost or Deputy Provost at any time through the College Administrator on 3313 (323313 externally) or the Porter’s Reception on 3300 (323300 externally). 

Provost: Tony Ward

Tony Ward, Provost of Alcuin College

The Provost is responsible for:

  • Chairing meetings of the College Committee
  • The pastoral and welfare needs of students resident at Alcuin College;
  • Personal and communal discipline;
  • Community-building activities through the Junior and Graduate Common Room Committees;representing the College on University committees;
  • Liaising between Alcuin and the other Colleges.

The Provost is often to be found in the College during the day and at weekends, but if you want to see him it’s sometimes better to arrange an appointment through the College Administrator. All consultations are carried out in total confidence.

The Deputy acts as Provost when the Provost is away from the College.

Like the Provost, it is sometimes better to arrange an appointment through the College Administrator.

College Dean: Natalie Kpoytko 

 

The College Dean is a member of University staff who is resident on campus.

The Dean is an integral part of the College welfare team and is generally accessible outside office hours. She lives in Langwith College.

The best way to contact her is through the College Administrator or via the Porters.

College Administrator: Sheila Ashton

Sheila Ashton, College Administrator

Mrs Ashton has an office on the first floor of the reception block (D Block) in room D/165. Her internal telephone number is 3313 and her email is sheila.ashton@york.ac.uk. Her working hours are 10-4.30 Monday to Friday.

The College Administrator provides the first point of contact for enquiries from residents on accommodation and general College matters. Within this broad remit responsibilities include:

  • Allocation of all undergraduate accommodation and maintenance of student records for the College
  • Acting as a central College repository for data concerning welfare intervention and disciplinary action
  • Maintaining records regarding all College keys
  • Dealing with general enquiries both internal and external relating to the College
  • General communications to College residents
  • Secretarial support, including arranging student meetings, for the Provost.

Facilities Manager

 

The Facilities Manager, John Maddison, can be contacted on (01904) 32 4192 and email john.maddison@york.ac.uk.  

The FM, whilst not a member of College staff as such, is the person responsible for the buildings, cleaning, recycling, grounds, and the physical infrastructure in general. The FM plays a central role in College life and helps sort out problems relating to the estate.

Porters

The College Porters can be contacted on 32-3300 and email: admn192@york.ac.uk

Porters are on duty in Alcuin College 24 hours per day most days of the year. The Porters play a central role in College life and can help in sorting out a great many problems including noise in the night, maintenance problems, key issue, mail handling and general security issues. If the Porters cannot help they will refer you to someone who can.

In the case of an emergency or where first aid is needed with the College, the Porters should be your first point of contact.
