Planning to come to Alcuin

The Students' Union will give you information about what to bring with you, so this is not an exhaustive list, but rather some things to think about.

Your study bedroom is large but, like all rooms, is limited in what you can fit in it.

Please consider your neighbours. Musical instruments are fine, but sometimes rather large and can cause noise problems. The same applies to hifi systems. Big powerful systems are great in large spaces but 'boomy' bass signals travel through buildings very effectively and you WILL get complaints!

Some of the things you will need are:
  • Bed linen
  • Towels and personal hygiene items
  • Clothing. Don't forget all-weather clothes: weather in the UK is variable! Average weather conditions in York.
  • Kitchen equipment. Pots, pans, crockery and cutlery are not provided in the kitchens.
  • Food and drink to suit your taste
  • Any sports clothes and/or equipment
  • A bike maybe, but please put it in the cycle sheds. Your bike is not allowed in your study bedroom, however valuable it is. Bring a wreck, not a £1,000 pound magnesium alloy-framed specialist machine.
  • Car? Not possible - leave it at home if you have one.
  • Stationery. It isn't a good idea to turn up for lectures without a notebook or paper and pens.
  • Cash facility. The only option here might be to bring cash. If this is the case for you, try to deposit it in a bank account as soon as you can and get a cash card.
  • Electrical goods - computer, TV (but make sure you get yourself a licence: the College does not provide licences for student rooms), hifi, bedside clock, mobile phone chargers, etc. Your study bedroom has a limited number of power sockets - think about how you are going to connect everything you plan to bring. It is your responsibility to ensure all electrical appliances brought into College are safe: we recommend you have items PAT tested before you come, if you can.
  • Camera. Bring a camera if you have one - you will have lots of opportunities to take photos of new friends and your College to show friends and family back home.

Electrical cooking equipment cannot be used in your study bedroom, but if you wish to bring something for communal use in the kitchen it should be safety-tested. If you plan to do this please check that it is acceptable before you come with the College Administrator. The kitchen will have most of what you need; check the accommodation pages and look up your specific block.

Make yourself a list of what you want to bring and build it up over the weeks before you come; that way you might not forget the one thing you cannot live without.  And finally, check there is enough space in your transportation to get everything in!
