Fundraising for a Major Research Programme

Be part of a step-change to tackle global problems...by supporting Chemistry at York in major research programmes.

The Department of Chemistry at York hosts one of the most successful science research teams in Britain.

  • Ranked third among UK chemistry departments in the recent Research Assessment Exercise, with 75% of research assessed as internationally excellent
  • One of the top departments in the UK, in any subject, for student satisfaction
  • The only UK science department to hold an Athena Swan Gold award for promoting women's careers in science

We are a standard bearer for high quality and admired internationally.

Our research strategy has highlighted three areas of research that we want to develop, which are of critical importance to people and to our planet..

Green Chemistry research student at work

Solar energy conversion

to develop innovative, environmentally-friendly approaches to chemical technology, including new energy sources and the next generation of biofuels.

Taking an ice core in the Antarctic

Atmospheric chemistry

to provide the necessary expertise to explore climate change science from urban pollution to global warming, and inform government policy.

Research student working under an inert atmosphere

Pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry

to design, investigate and evaluate new therapies, including the development of nanoscale systems, for challenging diseases such as MRSA, cystic fibrosis and cancer.

We have state-of-the-art facilities including the Centre for Magnetic Resonance and important links with York Neuroimaging, the York JEOL Nanocentre and the University Technology Facility.

We need your support as we continue this important work.  You can help by:

  • contributing in part, or in whole, to the costs of a Masters or PhD Degree for one or more research students
  • contributing in part, or in whole, to the costs of a new research building
