Speaker(s): Professor Julie Wilson, Department of Mathematics, University of York

The title of this talk is a quote from Edward Tufte, Professor Emeritus at Yale University and the aim of the talk is to provide some evidence for this statement. We live in a digitised world, but what can we learn from patterns in data? Every day, there are new applications and we can, for example, prevent fraud, predict earthquakes, identify food contaminants and distinguish between benign and malignant tumours. I will describe some of my current interdisciplinary projects, most involving chemical or biological data, with an emphasis on industrial collaboration.
