Celebrating 10 Years of Athena SWAN Chemistry Gold

In this Equality and Diversity Beacon Seminar, Prof Carolyn Bertozzi will talk about her own life and career experiences as an award winning scientist in the field of Living Systems Chemistry. This event marks the celebration of the Chemistry Department at York having held the Athena SWAN Gold Award for ten years.

The Athena SWAN Charter was established by the Equality Charter Unit in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research. To earn a gold award, a department must be able to demonstrate significant and sustained progression and achievement in promoting gender equality and addressing challenges particular to its academic area. Gold departments must be beacons of achievement in gender equality, and champion and promote good practice to the wider community.

Prof Carolyn Bertozzi has been described by the Royal Society of Chemistry as a “Rockstar Chemist”. Her talk will include personal reflections from Prof. Bertozzi on her life as a scientist and the importance of diversity in science. This lecture will be followed by an interactive panel discussion about diversity in the chemical sciences, providing the audience with an opportunity to get involved and ask questions of our experts.

Prof. Carolyn Bertozzi is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Chemical & Systems Biology and Radiology (by courtesy) at Stanford University, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.  She is considered one of the foremost multidisciplinary scientists of her generation.
