Biological Conversion of Biomass into Value Added Bio-Products

Energy security and environmental pollution continue to receive growing attention worldwide. Increasing concerns of global warming and the depletion of fossil resources affect both the energy and chemical industries. Current transportation fuels and commodity chemicals are heavily dependent on fossil resources.  Sustainable development of the energy and chemical industries demands the continuous supply of similar or alternative fuels/chemicals from renewable resources. An alternative and environmentally benign route for such products is bioconversion of renewable substrates into bio-derived fuels and bio-chemicals via a biorefinery strategy. In this presentation, a few case studies will be introduced to indicate the possible approaches for the value added biochemical production via biological conversion routes.
