Welcome to CHE’s first newsletter for 2012. In this issue we document our latest estimates of productivity for the NHS in England over the last 7 years, based on comprehensive data on inputs and outputs. Two articles report on recent research in cancer: in the first, we examine the cost-effectiveness of alternative treatment regimes in early breast cancer using a Markov model; and in the second, we compare alternative methods for investigating socioeconomic inequalities in the development of cancer. Inequality is also the focus of a brief report on a workshop held in York in which public health colleagues, policy makers and academics discussed how best to incorporate health inequality issues into cost-effectiveness analysis.
We are pleased to invite further applications for our Alan Williams Fellowships which were first launched in 2006 as a tribute to Alan in order to enable health economists from anywhere in the world to spend time in CHE. Recent publications, new projects and details of courses and workshops organised by CHE are also listed.
