Wind Turbine Installation
A 15m tall 15KW Proven Energy Wind Turbine
was installed at the Cape Verde
Atmospheric Observatory in February 2009. It was funded as part
of SOLAS. The turbine is
expected to consistently produce > 10KW of power assuming an average
wind speed of 7 m/s (see plots below). The power generated will
contribute to half the site's electricity and so has major economical
benefits for the Observatory in addition to increased
environmental sustainability. The turbine is expected to pay for
itself within 2 years. The sytem has yet to be integrated into
the local grid and this is expected to happen within the next few
months.
