The volcanic archipelago of Cape Verde is a group of 10 islands and 5 islets in the Atlantic Ocean, some 600km west of Senegal and near major north-south sea routes. This strategic location makes Cape Verde an important sea and air refuelling site.
The archipelago is divided into two groups: the Barlavento, or windward islands, in the north and the Sotavento, or leeward islands, in the south.
