The University of York opened with two buildings: Heslington Hall and the King's Manor.
In 1964, work began on developing the University campus on the marshy land around Heslington Hall. The development included landscaped parkland with a central man-made lake, innovative covered walkways, and the many CLASP buildings seen around campus.
By the end of the 1960s (and on schedule), the University of York's campus included five colleges, three laboratories, Central Hall, the JB Morrell Library, the sports hall and the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall.
The University of York's Heslington East development is situated close to the current University campus to the east of Heslington village. The area comprises 116 hectares and lies between Field Lane, Low Lane, the A64 Trunk Road, and Grimston on Hull Road.
Road access to the first phase of the development is via the new roundabout on Field Lane. The roundabout provides access to the phase one car park and bus interchange and for service and emergency service vehicles.
The car park provides 128 standard parking spaces and 20 motorcycle bays. Disabled parking spaces are located in closer proximity to the buildings. The bus interchange comprises four set-down and pick-up points together with a taxi pick up point.
