Frequently asked questions

Will the Heslington East expansion provide new jobs?

The construction of the new landscape and buildings will provide employment over the planned ten year development programme. There will also be additional permanent jobs associated with the new development. These will amount to about 4,500 new jobs for York. As a consequence of the growth in direct employment there will also be the creation of indirect jobs within York’s economy.

Won't traffic in the area become a lot worse with the development of Heslington East?

The University's strategy is to address and minimise the impact of travel demands. Staff, students and visitors will be encouraged to walk, cycle and use public transport. Car parking will eventually be located at the periphery of the campus and staff and students will be distributed around the expanded campus by a network of buses.

Will there be enough housing in York for all the new students?

The University will provide sufficient accommodation on the new campus for all demand created by the increase in student numbers for the duration of their course. The accommodation provided on Heslington East will be high quality with a range of facilities. However students will still be at liberty to decide whether they want to live on or off campus.

What will the impact be on Heslington West and the quality of life for those remaining on Heslington West?

There are a number of campus development and redevelopment projects underway and planned for Heslington West to ensure that the quality of life for staff and students across the whole campus is comparable.

Will the public be able to use the facilities on the new campus?

Yes, one of the guiding principles for the design of Heslington East is that it will be inclusive.

Key areas of interest to the public on campus are likely to be sport and leisure, culture, health, and educational activities. Sports facilities, and catering outlets are planned, as well as theatre and film shows in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television.

These complement existing sporting facilities, access to the University Library & Archives, public and open course lectures, a vibrant evening educational programme and the concert series, all of which are open to the community.

Are there any plans to create a new Library on Heslington East or to expand the existing Library provision?

At present, there are no plans to duplicate facilities on both areas of the Campus. The decision to avoid duplication of facilities was part of the sustainability principles.

The University Library has expanded into the adjacent Harry Fairhurst building to provide new facilities and services to support growth in numbers.  It provides access to a huge range of electronic information resources across the networks.  Learning and study spaces are being established on Heslington East, as well as wireless access throughout the residential and academic buildings.

Are there any definite plans for a swimming pool?

Plans to build a sports village with 25 metre community swimming pool, fitness club and outdoor pitches have been approved by the City of York Council and the University Council.  They will be completed in 2012 at the eastern end of the site.

Are there any plans to extend the health centre?

At present the University has no plans to extend the health centre.
