About the expansion at Heslington East

University growth and impact

York is one of the most highly rated universities in the UK, being consistently in the top ten in the league tables, and one of the top 100 universities in the world.  We continue to grow in research, innovation, and student numbers. As a world-class university, our space and facilities need to be of the highest quality.

Investment in our campus helps to improve the student experience, the interdisciplinary research environment, and our success with fostering local startups.

Community and planning

Heslington East and phase one

In 2007, following a public inquiry, the University acquired a 116 hectare site on Heslington East, adjacent to the existing campus at what we now call Heslington West, around two miles south east of the centre of York.  New academic and residential buildings, along with knowledge-based businesses, are planned for Heslington East.

The first phase of development was completed in October 2010, consisting of the 600-bed new Goodricke College opened in 2009, departmental buildings for Computer Science, Theatre, Film and Television and the York Law and Management Schools, along with lake, landscaping, paths and roads.

Archaeological findings

The University's Department of Archaeology has headed up an investigation of the archaeology of the Heslington East site.
