Safety training for high flyers

The Safety courses teaching team in the High Integrity Systems Engineering Research group at the University of York has developed a 1 week training course on the Safety Management Systems for the Civil Aviation Authority inspectors at Gatwick Airport.

The course was based on the Safety Management System Manual ICAO 9859 which provides detailed guidance on the principles and practices of aviation safety management. This manual has been a standard for the civil aviation industry since 2009.

The course was developed with the CAA who provided some background material to develop the case studies to support the course.

The lecture material was largely based on the manual and was developed by the University of York who have an international reputation in the area of safety management and safety critical systems engineering.

From October 2007 to February 2008, approximately 150 staff have been trained.

Following the successful running of these courses other contracts with UK based airlines are now being developed.
