STRESSOR 5: ROLE

Role: whether people understand their role within the organisation and whether the organisation ensures that the person does not have conflicting roles

Management standard:

  • Employees indicate that they understand their role and responsibilities
  • Systems are in place locally to respond to any individual concerns

What should be happening / states to be achieved:

  • The Department ensures that, as far as possible, the different requirements it places upon employees are acceptable
  • The Department provides information to enable employees to understand their role and responsibilities
  • The Department ensures that, as far as possible, the requirements it places upon employees are clear
  • Systems are in place to enable employees to raise concerns about any uncertainties or conflict they have in their role and responsibilities

Measures currently in place to achieve standard:

  • Staff have a written, clearly defined description of their role and responsibilities
  • Staff are encouraged to discuss concerns relating to their role and responsibilities with their line manager at the earliest opportunity
  • Annual Performance Review of all staff provides a further opportunity for workers to discuss their role and responsibilities with their line manager and, specifically, to identify objectives and priorities for the coming year
  • Staff can also discuss issues relating to their role and responsibilities with the Biology Human Resources Manager
  • University provides an independent 'helpline' for individuals experiencing stress
  • Good induction process in place for all staff
  • Line managers expected to provide support, as part of their normal role and responsibilities, to workers whose role may change

Feedback from consultation: issues relating to 'role' requiring attention

Further action required:

  • Stress awareness training required for all managers to make them aware that 'role' is one of the key stress risk factors requiring effective management
  • Ensure that any management training programmes include the identification and management of stress
