Training and other events

In addition to training and events organised centrally by the Researcher Development Team (RDT), the Department of Biology hosts many of its own training events. See the lists below to find out more.

Events in the Department

nullCoffee and Careers

Each month we welcome a speaker from a different career area to talk about their career path, to give you an insiders view of their job and to give you top tips for following in their footsteps.  Many of our researchers have gone into careers as a direct result of contact with a Coffee and Careers speaker - so come along and make the most of this great opportunity to meet informally with a range of professionals.  And with coffee and freshly-baked cookies available too - what could be better?

(usually!) Fridays 10.30-11.30.

Friday 24th May 2013, 10.30-11.30 in biology room M023
Benjamin Owens, Academia+: Making the most of opportunities during your PhD and Postdoc
Oxford – UCB Pharma Fellow, Translational Gastroenterology Unit, Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford.

I completed my BSc in Immunology at the University of Bristol in 2007 and then studied for my
PhD in immune regulation with Paul Kaye at the CII in York.

In 2011 I started a position as a Postdoctoral Scientist at the University of Oxford.
Earlier this year I was awarded an Oxford – UCB Pharma fellowship to develop my own programme
of work on human stromal cells in chronic intestinal inflammation, working with Fiona Powrie FRS.

In addition to my lab position I teach undergraduate and graduate students as a tutor in Medicine
and am an associate member of Jesus College. I am co-founder and chair of the Stromal Immunology Group,
Secretary of the Oxford Immunology Group and hold two board-level positions at the
British Society for Immunology. I also volunteer as a biomedical grant reviewer for the UK MS Society. In 2011 I led a team of Oxford scientists in the Biotechnology YES business plan competition, with our company, MetaChem Solutions, eventually taking first place in the UK competition. In late 2013 I will undertake a fellowship in biopharmaceutical entrepreneurship at INSEAD Business School, Paris.

Over coffee I will discuss life as a postdoctoral fellow, highlighting the many ‘out of lab’ activities
that are available to you as a PhD student/Postdoc, and which – in my case at least- have become more enjoyable than the lab work itself!
