Sort all sub-groups and their contexts in numerical order to form groups and add a column with the Group codes. Save an extract of Context, Category, Parent context; Basic interpretation, Interpretative code, Processual code, Sub-group and Group codes into a new group file (Appendix 1.6 including column 'Group').
Under a common site code the database uses groups as the second level of interpretation. Add the number of the group to the relevant sub-groups and any further comment.
Try and keep the text to a minimum because it is written to explain your grouping structure but not yet meant for publication. A table helps to standardise the necessary information. Below group number and heading of this group write a brief discussion referring to the content of each of the component sub-groups (leaving the description behind and thus reaching a more general interpretation than at the sub-group level). This summary serves as a justification for all further work. The group discussion lifts the sub-group to the next higher level of interpretation.
