Profile

Biography

Timur Tatlioglu BA (York), MA (York), PhD (York) is interested in the way we interpret historic landscapes, particularly post-medieval estates. His doctoral research, Biographies of People and Place: The Harewood Estate, 1698-1812, focused on the development of the Harewood Estate, West Yorkshire, during the eighteenth century.
Timur is particularly interested in the use of biography within archaeological interpretation. His work draws on the ‘biographies of people and place’, which are used to introduce multivocality, or different ‘voices’, into interpretation of material evidence. These perspectives, such those of the landowning family, local craftsmen and tenants, help to challenge some of the taken-for-granted stories and grand narratives that are often associated with country house estates.

Another research interest includes the development of post-medieval parks and gardens, and the relationship between the materiality of these landscapes and the lives of their owners. This is reflected in his involvement with the Parks and Gardens Database for the United Kingdom, where he organised the biographies of those historic people who have been involved with the creation and maintenance of parks and gardens.

Tim has also been heavily involved with public interpretation of academic research having collaborated with the Harewood House Trust by providing academic inputs to exhibitions and carrying out a number heritage walks and lectures. Tim was also the exhibition researcher for ‘Discover Greenwich’, the new visitors’ centre on the site of the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich.

Tim is currently based in London where he works as a heritage consultant for URS/Scott Wilson. As part of a small built heritage team, he undertakes various projects relating to the development and conservation of historic buildings. Specifically, he is currently working on the high-profile Crossrail project, the new rail link through London to be completed in 2017. In his capacity as Built Heritage Specialist for Paddington Station, he is often found assessing historic fabric as well as overseeing the required heritage consents.

Research

Overview

Research Interests:

Tim’s thesis was primarily concerned with changes to the Harewood Estate landscape that were led by Edwin Lascelles, 1st Baron Harewood (1712-1795) from 1755. He sought to bring together a variety of sources including archaeological and documentary evidence, to gauge the impact of both the landowning family and the other contemporary groups who lived on the estate.

General Research Interests:

•    The development of eighteenth-century country house estates and their impact on local society;
•    The use of biography within archaeological interpretation;
•    The meaning, use and function post-medieval parks and gardens;
•    Interpretation of historic landscapes and their presentation to the public;
•    Analysis and interpretation of historic buildings.
